Film Noir Brownies

So, my daughter joined Brownies a few weeks ago, and my mother sent over a few pictures of her leading a Brownie troop somewhere in New Jersey. Not sure of the year.
What a beautifully lit shot. And somehow, composed like a Renaissance painting. If only there was a small river flowing in front of them and some wafting clouds and cyprus trees in the background.
Bottom line, my daughter thought it was AMAZING!!

April 14 1966 Larry playing with very safe toy

This just in from my Aunt Vicki: "All those fotos you have from Zaidie, my Uncle Harry most of my life, I saw as they came out of the chemical bath. He was wonderful and passionate about his photography and he taught all of us how it was done. Standing next to him in the basement dark room (Highland Ave) in the red light sniffing the chemical smells and bathing the pix in the bathtub, hanging them on the line to dry. These images remain because he was so patient and treated us with respect, like we were all capable of doing what he was doing... Man, that's love!!!"

28.12.1968 Proud Dad with some other kid!

I was the fourth grandchild. And even for Harry Roth, the novelty of taking pictures of this 'new' grandchild wore off a bit.

There are perhaps hundreds of thousands of pics of Happy (yes, that is his name), stacks of Steven, smatterings of Larry and eventually a few requisite baby pics of me.

Let's face it, the fourth child tends to arrive without much fanfare. As a result, pictures of me gooing or gaaing, are rare. But I've always loved this rare photo of me and my dad, and only as I just put it on the scanner and read my grandfather's handwriting on the back, did I realise that it's not me. It's never been me. My memories are a lie! A sham! Larry? But? But...

Ah well, it is still one of my favourites.

My father couldn't beam brighter.

Kids had a great time playing in rubble until Health & Safety came along to spoil it for everyone.

Baseball in the face. May.31.1969

This is one of my favourite photos. I love the actual worry on my face as I notice my brother's eyes firmly closed and the feeble attempt to catch a ball that can only, at best, be caught in his mouth.

Backyard Touch Football - 1968

Larry Freedman cleaning out a fish tank.

Jill Cole - 1967

Jill Cole (and all the Coles) are cousins who aren't cousins but are. Let's just say old friends. Our parents were friends growing up, and their parents before that. Jill and Susie lived much closer to our grandparents and both Rose and Harry filled in and were very much Bub and Zaid to those kids too. They very much considered them extra grandchildren and doled out just as much love and spoiling, if not more! And we never thought of Jill and Susie as anything other than really cool cousins. Obviously Jill wasn't looking very cool at this age. Just cute.

Fishing on Lake Champlain - 1965?

Steven, Happy, and my Dad. Look at the size of that fish!

Why don't people wear hats like this anymore?

Dinah Max, Rose Roth and Phyllis at the Museum of Natural History.

Good hats. Clearly a big day out.

The one that looks like she's about 8 is my mom. My Grandmother, Rose Roth, is the one holding her with an white gloved - vice like - grip.

Annie Roth and Nadine Roth, neices of Harry

In the Great Depression, when taking up an expensive hobby was frowned upon, especially by my grandmother, he took up photography. Eventually they could afford film and food.
Says Nadine Weinberg, "Ann and I were in front of my house on Riverdale Avenue playing with the carriages. I think the year may have been 1948 or 1949. We were about 3 or 4." Ah cute.
